Transfer Shopping From Home
Posted on January 19th, 2012 | by Jonathan Moffett in Harry Redknapp,OpinionIt’s been a strange week at Tottenham. No midweek match no imminent transfer news and probably most odd and peculiar for any given week, no ramblings from Harry. Perhaps all that wining and dining down on the French Mediterranean has taken its toll. As a consequence there has been little for me to get my teeth into and pass opinion on.
I’ve spent some time lurking on fan forums and trolling through the depths of transfer frenzied discussion and rife speculation. Amidst all the huffing and puffing associated with a 4 week transfer window and not enough fresh air comes an overwhelming sense of snobbery, as some but not all dismiss the idea that our club should be linked to players that don’t have a foreign stamp on the passport.
I’ve always been amazed that some Spurs supporters consider a £30m foreigner the only acceptable and reasonable transfer target suitable to take us to the next level. I fear that too many have not learned from the Scott Parker experiment which some were so opposed to in recent times. Source an experienced Premiership player who has the attributes for a position required, offer a reasonable lump of cash and complete the deal.
I’d be more than happy if Stephen Fletcher or Shane Long or Danny Graham was lined up to replace the Russian during this transfer window. Hungry players with Premiership experience who have attributes as good as anything liable to come from the continent and beyond, baring the obvious talents who ply their trade for the best and who would demand a transfer fee and wages which would make Mr Levy politely hang up the phone and not call back.
There is no doubting that a ‘special signing’ would be welcomed by all at White Hart Lane and I am not going to sit here and deny that I would object if we were to unveil a Brazilian wonder kid tomorrow. We have a history of attracting some of the very best players from all parts of the world and long may that continue. I merely insinuate that foreign and expensive does not necessarily mean better. There are alternatives. There is an opportunity to find a diamond amongst the rocks much closer to these shores.
And so with that rant over folks, its back to transfer speculation for me. I’m just glad I came up for air!
