Spurs need to open the doors for Summer Sales

sale_onAnyone who has been shopping in central London recently would have noticed the large banners hanging in almost all shop windows. Massive savings on all items, with huge reductions of up to 50% emblazoned on the foremost frontage of the latest merchandise outlets. The High St sales are nearly over, with only a few oddly sized garments left and the swarms of frantic shoppers that flocked to the first day are decreasing in numbers.

In the football world, the summer sale tends to work the opposite to that of the high Street, as most clubs avoid the first day panic in exchange for a cut price deal at the end of August. It seems as though Spurs are taking that very approach with their patient attitude towards the current transfer market. Apart from the tedious ongoing battle of ambition matching between Chelsea, Spurs and Luka Modric, the club has rarely troubled the gossip writers since the season ended in May.

It could simply be a case of biding their time to get the right players, alternatively, it could be the realisation that without the income of sales, new faces will remain untenable. If this is the case, then perhaps Spurs need to hang up some large white and red sale signs of their own. It is obvious to all concerned that an ill timed meeting on a yacht, or an incorrectly addressed email is all it would take for us to lose the services of our top players, but Who is going to come and buy the fringe players of our squad unless we invest in some hardcore advertising?

bentleyThe discounts could start at the club shop, with billboards offering David Bentleys at 50% off, or perhaps a buy one Jenas and get a Bostock loan deal for free. Whatever the method that the club use it needs to happen quickly. The vision of Harry Redknapp arriving at a remote car park in the early hours of Sunday morning, his boot stuffed full with Alan Hutton, Roman Pavlychenko and Giovanni Dos Santos, might seem far fetched now, but time waits for no one these days.

I have seen numerous interviews with Harry Redknapp recently, where he has strenously denied approaches for Modric. Stating that he is worth more than the offers being received, that he cannot be sold at any cost. Thats fair enough, but what about the players who are sellable at any cost? – literally. How about the ones who we can let go? Why not talk about them a little more? Then perhaps we can raise some cash to buy a new striker, and match this ambition we keep talking about. I would like to see Harry Redknapp conduct his next press interview in front of a giant screen displaying the greatest goals of Robbie Keane, or perhaps pictures of Peter Crouch walking through an office accompanied by the slogan “are you paying too much for your mediocre footballers?”palacios

Manchester City seem to have got the right idea. They left their unwanted squad fillers at home, whilst the first team are touring the latest merchandise crazy country, playing money orientated friendlies. The pictures of Emmanuel Adebayor training with the City youth team last week was enough to tempt me into an offer! The guy is clearly not happy and I am sure the action taken by City will get him sold, its not exactly subtle!

Why don’t Spurs do the same?, Sky sports could report that Wilson Palacios was seen scything down a promising attacking midfielder from the Spurs under 9’s side, whilst venting his frustration at not making the trip to South Africa.

The fact remains, that without selling some of these players. The new signings that every Spurs fan and diminutive Croatian requires, may not materialise. So its time to get out the A-boards and stand on the street corners….Spurs sale? this way.
