Real Madrid winning the derby was no surprise. What was a surprise was that for a short time here it looked like they might not. Adrián’s goal gave Atletico Madrid an early and unexpected lead at the Santiago Bernabéu but his cool finish was quickly followed by a red card for the goalkeeper Thibault Courtois and a Cristiano Ronaldo equaliser from the penalty spot. Suddenly, this was a whole new ball game.

Angel di María, Gonzalo Higuaín and Ronaldo, again, did the rest. Two red cards, two penalties, and a 4-1 final score took Real to 13 consecutive wins this season and 21 derbies without defeat, going back 12 years.
