Emmanuel Adebayor is hoping his two goals in Real Madrid’s 4-0 win over Tottenham Hotspur will help him earn a long-term deal at the club. The on loan City striker headed home in each half during Tuesday’s Champions League quarter-final first leg in Madrid.
“I have two months to go and the club will decide what they want to do – but of course I want to stay,” he said, “I just have to keep working hard every day in training. They brought me here to help with the run-in to the end of the season – and today I have done that well.”
Adebayor has now scored 10 goals in as many games against Spurs – with eight of those coming while with former club Arsenal, Tottenham’s north-London rivals.
“I am very happy when I play against Spurs as I always have a chance to score. So now we have to concentrate on the second game to go through to the semi-finals.”
Meanwhile another on-loan City player, Nedum Onuoha, feels at home in the Black Cats’ squad but admits his long-term future remains uncertain. The former England Under-21 international joined Steve Bruce’s side last August after finding himself surplus to requirements at Eastlands.
Bruce is keen to keep the defender permanently but no movements have been made on that front so far and although Onuoha is happy on Wearside he accepts his future may not be decided for some time.
“It’s difficult to say I belong to City because I don’t even have a (squad) number there”’ he said, “I definitely feel a part of this squad at Sunderland. It has started to feel different as the season has gone on. I did not really know what was going to happen when I first signed but I can’t make any decisions so I have just had to accept it. I know there are a maximum of seven more games now for me here. At the end of the season I will sit back and think how this went. Then I will start pre-season, if it is at City to begin with, and see how things go from there. Essentially I am still their player so I am in their hands.”
