The toon youngster and younger brother of Shola Ameobi has today returned from Dubai after training with the Nigerian under 20′s. Sammy told the press there is many benefits from international duty as it’s a great boost for when players alike himself return to their clubs. While in Dubai with the side, Sammy made a few appearances in some friendlies including ties against Egypt and Saudi Arabia.
This is what he told the press when returning to Tyneside earlier today: “It went really well. It was a great experience to bring back here, with different sides of football that I have never seen before. The way they play their football is totally different to what I am used to, so I had to adapt, but I think I did it quite well. It was a lot different to what I expected it to be in terms of the way they do training and everything like that. There are a lot of quick players and it is very physical, so I was forced to use my head a lot of the time to know where to be at the right time to make good runs.”
The 18 year old went on to comment: “I struggled a little bit with the heat as it was very humid, but I managed to make it through and I think the gaffer was pleased with me. It seemed like the team were also quite pleased with me and that I could be a good attribute to their squad for the tournament coming up. I think I’ll be going back out soon before the tournament to try and establish myself. There is a 21 man squad they will take, so I want to get in that to be able to play for Nigeria.”
