In the curtain raiser for the 2011/12 season, Manchester United put in a very commanding performance, and overcame their local rival, Manchester City, 3-2 to win the FA Community Shield at Wembley Stadium.

Completely against the run of play, Joleon Lescott headed home from close range and then Edin Dzeko scored a decent goal from distance to give City the commanding lead, however, a goal from Chris Smalling and two from Nani turned the game on its head.
This was United's 19th Community / Charity Shield triumph and the celebrations from the manager and his coaching staff completely contradicted how much critics think that this first piece of silverware on the offering is to this club.
