Jens Lehmann is to briefly return to Arsenal in a coaching capacity after being handed the opportunity to train the club’s next generation of youngsters by boss Arsene Wenger.

The German goalkeeper retired from playing last season after an indifferent two-year spell at Stuttgart and is gaining experience at the Emirates before he undertakes coaching qualifications later in the year, although the paper reports that he would prefer a sporting director role.

He told the Daily Mail: “To me, learning is always fun.

“I have plans for March and this one is already guaranteed: to coach Arsenal youth players for a few days.”

The eccentric stopper had much to say about the backroom work of his former club as well as Spanish champions Barcelona – describing them as the benchmark to which all teams must aspire.

“Arsenal and Barcelona are technically the best teams out there in the world,” he said. “This the standard.

“Barcelona have a system they have practised for 15 or 20 years. Arsenal have also studied this philosophy under Arsene Wenger for more than 10 years.”
