Is It Evans Going To Get Better?

Posted on December 27th, 2011 | by The United Religion in Chris Smalling, injury,Phil Jones,Rio Ferdinand

If Sir Alex Ferguson thought that things couldn’t get worse on the injury front, he was proven wrong, as Jonny Evans was forced off with a calf injury during the 5-0 win over Wigan Athletic.

Any more injuries and United will be down & out?

Already short four of his five center-backs, the Gaffer was forced to put Michael Carrick in the center of defense to partner Evans, but he had to deploy the vertically challenged, Patrice Evra, alongside the midfielder for the entire second half.

Nemanja Vidic is out for the season with a serious knee injury; Rio Ferdinand has had his persistent back injury flair up, and Chris Smalling and Phil Jones, who was forced off against Fulham for blurred vision, both missed the Wigan game with a virus.

Even though most people thought he was withdrawn due to being on a yellow card, Ferguson, speaking to the BBC Radio Five Live, stated, “Jonny came off injured. He has a calf injury and will be out for two weeks.”

Ferguson knows that the injury concern has worsened at United, and he admits that it’s wearimg him thin, as he said, “We have had a nightmare the last few days. Phil Jones and Chris Smalling have both been ill. Rio Ferdinand called off yesterday with a back injury and Jonny Evans has come off at half-time, it does put you under pressure.”

Hopefully, what happened during the 2009/10 season, doesn’t happen again. The manager somehow maneuvered through a couple of games with a make-shift back-four, but they were finally exposed in the 3-0 hammering against Fulham – and with a tight title race on the horizon, the team can ill-afford that.

Smalling and Jones are, supposedly, just struggling with an illness, so they theoretically should be back for Blackburn on the 31, Ferguson’s 70th birthday, and then five days later on the 4th of January with the trip to Newcastle.

However, if it does get worse, Sir Alex Ferguson might have to think long and hard about delving into the transfer market, because they need to at least have a few options in defense, because midfielders holding down the fort just won’t cut it long term.
