Could You Really Fault Dimitar Berbatov If He Left?

Sky Sports is reporting that Dimitar Berbatov may be bringing his Manchester United career to a premature end – and could you blame him if he did?

One of the most disliked players to ever suit up for the Reds, and at one point or another, Berba has fallen out of favor with Sir Alex Ferguson every season since he arrived from Tottenham in 2008.

Most are quick to forget, Berbatov ended the 2010/11 Premier League season as the Golden Boot Award winner with 20 goals as he helped United to their 19th title, but now he’s seen as excess.

Over the first part of this season, Berbatov, despite the influx of injuries to every other striker, has failed to break into Ferguson’s plans and is there comes a point when you have to say to yourself, “Enough is enough!” and move on.

Back in December, Ferguson both said that he had no intention of selling Berbatov, but that looks to be changing, like most of the manager’s words these days. Berba has never once said anything bad about the manager, the club or the supporters, which means, if he does leave, he will leave with his head held high.

The popular news outlet said, “Dimitar Berbatov has been spotted catching a flight to Frankfurt amid reports of transfer talks with Bayer Leverkusen.” And continued, “Sky Sports sources understand Dimitar Berbatov is travelling for talks over a return to Bayer Leverkusen, while there is also interest from Bayern Munich and Anzhi Makhachkala.”

Berbatov is often the one blamed for losses, especially the recent back-to-back ones to Blackburn and Newcastle, it would be good for him to go to a club, a set of supporters and country that appreciate what a truly great footballer he is. Most complain about him costing £30m, but that’s only because Ferguson was late to the table in 2006, as Spurs beat him to his signature and soaked United for £20m more two years later.

The amount that United will make from this sale is minuscule and will have no impact on their summer dealings, if there are any that is. So for somebody to make that point is quite foolish and the fact that some say that he won’t be needed is even more laughable.

Let’s see, last summer, Ferguson made a point of saying that he has seven strikers at the club and was unwilling to part with any of them, but in five months he could be without most of them!

Federico Macheda is off to Queens Park Rangers, which really could signal the end of his United career on his own volition in an attempt to get more playing time; It’s also said that Wayne Rooney, even though the club, the manager and player adamantly deny it – that he could be off in the summer; Michael Owen can’t stay fit and is out of contract in the summer; Mame Biram Diouf can’t make a proper throw-in. So if Berbatov leaves, United could be left with two forwards – Javier Hernandez and Danny Welbeck.

This season those two, along with the other five, have all spent time on the treatment table and Berbatov’s departure could put even more pressure on the depleted United squad.

In the end, you cannot fault Dimitar Berbatov if he has finally had enough of wasting his career away at Manchester United, but it will be a sad day to lose a player of his quality when supporters are crying for those sort of players.
