Could a promising young right back be in our future?
Posted on August 9th, 2011 | by Jack in Ghana,UncategorizedAttacking proficiency on the right side of our defense is not exactly something we’ve possessed in recent seasons. That’s hardly a secret.
Sure, Branislav Ivanovic has been outstanding as a fullback. Outstanding in the face of being forced into the position. Applaud the man. Still, no matter how much we love him (and trust me we do), his ability in the offensive third of the field has never been of elite quality.
Thus, with this perhaps in mind, links with varieties of right backs – well, one in particular, began as early as April.
Those links slowly waned, however. For what reason, we have no idea. I mean, it’s not as if the club somehow miraculously unearthed a savior at the position in the last few months – sorry, Paulo.
Today, the right back chatter resurfaced. With whom have we been attached you ask?
No, not this guy.

This guy.

Who?
The Mirror is reporting that Romes is sending his favorite henchman chief scout, Michael Emenalo, to Watford on Tuesday to watch the international friendly between Ghana and Nigeria. Emenalo’s priority will be assessing promising Ghanaian right fullback Samuel Inkoom.
Inkoom is a very interesting prospect. He’s 22, equally adept on both ends of the park and, yeah, he’s built like a brick shithouse. Inkoom, who currently unhappily kicks up dust in the Ukraine for FC Dnipro, is not exactly the fastest option at the position, but he certainly has enough in the tank, coupled with his strength, to compete – and likely thrive – in the Premier League. Stephen over at We Ain’t Got Not History profiled Inkoom back in June, and it’s a great read. Check it out here.
There’s not really much to the Mirror piece; it is the Mirror after all. But they do specify, so we’ll at least be able to call them out on this shit if Emenalo doesn’t in fact show up in Watford tomorrow. The story goes on to say that Inkoom would be available for between £4-6 million, which is a damn bargain, and that Fulham as well as Aston Villa have shown interest in the player.
Of course this is all speculation but, if this were to go down it would, in my estimation, represent another smart piece of business for the club in a summer chock full of it. What’s gotten into our Chelsea?
Bonus: Here’s a video of Inkoom – the only decent one on YouTube. It focuses on his defensive work.
