Cahill will solve Chelsea’s Playstation defence problems

Ducky’s Note: Ratna Prashanth analyzes Cahill’s signing and what it means for Chelsea

Finally, after a loooooong discussion of personal terms, Chelsea announced the signing of Bolton Wanderers’ English-born central defender Gary Cahill. This is a much needed signing at a low price in January market, considering the fact that Chelsea have been having a torrid time with their defence the whole season.

So what does Mr Cahill brings at the back?

Stability

Luiz has been erratic, aggressive, and often loses concentration which has cost the team badly. Cahill is the  sort of player who can bring the ball upfront and keep up the pressing game AVB idolizes while at the same time keeping the defensive positioning without losing concentration. He is a player of Terry’s nature and has a bit of pace as well, unlike Terry. Being Terry’s England partner, he brings in better understanding with his defensive partner and this two will be like two brother in arms!

Band of Brothers

Calmness and winning mentality

A real leader in the Bolton shirt, Cahill brings in extra leadership at the back and this means better communication between the back four. He also brings in a winning mentality and determination to drive the team forward which Chelsea have been lacking for the last few months.

Better right back!

Yes, you read that right. If Cahill plays in central defense, Ivanovic will be pushed to the right back position, a role where Bosingwa isn’t really the player he used to be and Ivanovic clearly seems more comfortable in. This brings in greater solidity and the Chelsea defense which was once called a rock/fort/impenetrable will be back.

Yeaah good old days at the back are back!

English angle

With rule of home-grown players starting to make its presence felt, Cahill the Englishman will fill this slot. This means Chelsea are satisfying the home grown criteria with another English player and that too a massive signing which couldn’t have come earlier

Luiz will groom better

With Cahill’s addition, Luiz will have to be content with a place on the bench most times for the rest of the season. This means more time in the training ground, developing patience and continuing to improve. Don’t forget, this is a player who impressed one and all in his first two months in a Chelsea shirt with his distinctly un-English approach to defending. The same approach has unfortunately proved a bane for him in recent times, and some time to improve his game will definitely help. Also, with Cahill being a clone of Terry, Captain Fantastic can be rested for few games and this aids in better squad rotation.

AVB’s quote on Cahill “Gary is a player of tremendous technical qualities for a central defender, which is what we like, because of our possession when we build up from the back “ – a bargain for 7 million after Mata! :)

Finally!

Keep the blues flag flying high
