A Window of Hope
Posted on January 17th, 2012 | by Jonathan Moffett in Harry Redknapp,Opinion,Roman PavlyuchenkoIt was brought to my attention yesterday that the January transfer window has now reached its halfway point. To date, the club has announced the signing of Iago Falque from Juventus, making his loan deal permanent after some encouraging performances in the Europa League this season.
Falque’s first task on signing was to pack his bags and make his way to the South Coast where he will spend the remainder of the season on loan with promotion chasing Southampton. A good move and a good opportunity for the youngster to gain some first team experience.
The hope would be amongst most though, that come Jim White’s 11th hour antics on transfer deadline day, further business will have been completed at White Hart Lane as we look to push on in the final months of the season. An opportunity that surely all at the club recognise.
Harry has made no secret that he will, if the opportunity arises, make a move for a ‘special player’. I make the assumption that by ‘special player’ Harry does not refer to a centre back in the shape of Chris Samba. One would presume that ‘special’ would convey someone who can put the ball in the net rather than keep it out. Ade looks tired, Defoe is unhappy and Pav, well he is just Pav.
Loic Remy would fit the hash tag, but Harry was informed “non” from all concerned during a personal visit to Marseille on Sunday. In fact it was rumoured that the only thing Harry came back from France with was a nice bottle of red.
Throughout the next fortnight expect spectacular links to anyone who has ever scored more than 3 league goals in an entire season, as we look for umpteenth transfer window to replace the one who fled to the red half of Manchester in 2008. We’ve been here many times before and most will recall a deadline day blitz of Europe last January when we made bids for at least 32 La Liga strikers including Rossi, Aguero and Llorente. Would it be silly to expect things to be any different this year?
Do be warned though. Any incomings are likely to depend on shifting the Russian or the Brazilian first. Both have been at the gates for some time but Levy is unlikely to offer bargain basement prices for players that cost in the region of £15m jointly.
And so as we wait and the transfer window gets ready to ‘slam shut’ (in the voice of Jim White) my advice would be simple. Expect little, hope much! It’s the Tottenham way.
